We started Out of Head project from choosing words from Words Clout:
This words above inspired our original idea.
These are initial storyboards that explore various ideas that we implemented to final animation or not. (sketches by Zoe)
The main theme was “Closing from society”. Main character fights themself in their mind, to be themself or trap real identity. At the end character closes as flower and presented to the viewer as normal as possible.

After some communication, was decided to make character more human like, also implementing more interestingly idea of open and closed flower: (Designed by Wendy)
First character represents the inner side of person, opened, but triggered, since they are in constant fighting with themself. Second version is character in the closed state, how she presents herself to society.
Soon after we created an overall story to show: Main character of the story is a girl that firstly is presented to viewers in the form of her true self. Due to not being able to follow society, struggling with her identity, she keeps constantly fighting in her mind, trying to cope with norms that she feels a need to follow. Film shows character’s shadows, that symbolize her opinions and different parts of herself, telling to obey, or rebel, push true emotions to surface or burry them under a forced smile. At the end we see her shutting her face, literal embodiment of distancing from reality, and presenting in different form, saying “Hello” to the viewer.
My part was to colour animation and create sound design. I tried to match colors of the background, but using more warm shades for character to stood up against it.

While coloring animation I was in the process of sound design. I recorder my speech and reversed it. After that we decided to add more sounds to make audio heavier with emotions, since we wanted illustrate struggle and fighting of different shadows – opinions. Each group member recorded whispering of some words, to be added on the background. Rustling of plastic packaging was added too, for disturbing effect.

I am my true self, only in my mind, not outside. I cannot follow society, norms that it dictates. Confused. This makes me tear myself apart. Struggle to showmyself, accept, I choose to hide feeling and true emotions. Need to suppress feelings, make myself normal so everybody can understand me. Normal is good. Normal is right. Is it?

Then, I decided to add some volume to every action, so I recorded splashing sounds, using bowl of water.

After some discussion group members though of using musical composition. Because we cannot use even non copyright music, I needed to create my own. Using Garage bang and manipulating audio in premiere I got interesting piano song and got used in the animation.
After Video editing by Wendy, we finished our Out of Head Animation.
